In late May of 2022, our CEO of 15 years Dennis Glass will retire and step into a new role as Chairman of the Lincoln National Corporation Board. He is succeeded by Ellen Cooper, who has been with the company for 10 years as our Chief Investment Officer with expanding responsibilities leading our Enterprise Risk organization and our Annuities business.
A couple weeks away from the official transition date, Dennis shared his reflections with our 11,000 employees:
To: Team Lincoln
From: Dennis Glass
Subject: Thank you for a remarkable journey
As we approach our CEO transition on May 27, I’ve been reflecting quite a bit on my time at Lincoln. After 15 years as CEO and nearly 30 years at this company, it’s difficult to put into words just how much this organization means to me. For most of my adult life, I’ve had two top priorities: my family, and the Lincoln family – our people, our customers, our partners and our shareholders.
One of my primary objectives as CEO has been to foster a company culture where people feel valued for who they are and the perspectives they bring, and are provided with opportunities to grow and develop. A work environment that is supportive, trusting and collaborative. I couldn’t be more proud of the culture we’ve built together here at Lincoln, and I want to express my deepest appreciation to each of you for all you do to make this company such a special place to work and to build a career. It’s our culture that has made us so successful – it drives how we operate, how we build relationships, how we serve our customers and partners, how we give back to our communities, and of course how we attract and retain the best talent – all of you.
Many of you have heard me talk about optimism over the years. I always say that my optimism comes from knowing we have the right people and the right strategies to overcome challenges and capture opportunities. I feel honored to have worked alongside all of you to deliver each day on our purpose as an organization: Providing financial peace of mind to everyday Americans, enabling people to plan for and protect their financial futures. I continue to be inspired by the work you do and your commitment to our stakeholders, our communities and to one another.
We’ve been through a lot together – a financial crisis, a pandemic, mergers and acquisitions, market volatility, a heightened focus on racial justice in our country – and I firmly believe that every challenge or change has made us stronger. There will always be new challenges on the horizon, and our world will continue to evolve… but our strong and optimistic culture will continue to propel this company forward in the face of whatever comes our way. As I look forward, I’m incredibly confident in Ellen Cooper, the leadership team and in all of you. While I won’t be part of the day-to-day operations after May, I am so pleased that I will continue to be part of this amazing Lincoln family in my role as Chairman of the Board.
When I first started at this organization nearly 30 years ago, I never could have imagined all that was to come… all that I would experience and learn, and all the fantastic people I would meet and have the privilege of working with along the way. I want to thank our Board of Directors, our Senior Management team, and all of you for making my time here so memorable. I’m profoundly grateful for the lasting connections and relationships that have made our workplace – whether in the office or virtual – so fulfilling and meaningful. I can’t wait to watch all that you will continue to achieve. The future is bright for Team Lincoln.
