Employees come together to support organization dedicated to promoting reading among children in Philadelphia
RADNOR, Pa. – Lincoln Financial Group (NYSE: LNC) announced today a donation of 20 book nooks and 2,000 books to Read by 4th, in support of the organization’s promise to ensure all of Philadelphia’s children are reading on grade level by the time they enter the 4th grade.
More than 130 of Lincoln Financial’s IT/Digital employees volunteered to build bookshelves for 20 book nooks that will be placed throughout Philadelphia, serving as a powerful reminder that reading can happen anywhere, not just at home or at school. Employees also donated an additional 353 books to further fill the shelves.
“Continuous learning is critical to the success of the Lincoln Financial IT/Digital team and helps us to stay ahead of digital and industry trends. I’m proud that we share our passion for education beyond our walls to benefit community programs such as our annual giving back team-building effort and codeLinc,” said Ken Solon, executive vice president, chief information officer and head of digital at Lincoln Financial. “Early literacy is foundational to driving economic development in our communities and it’s a privilege to partner with organizations such as Read by 4th, that are working on the front-lines to turn the page on literacy rates in Philadelphia.”
This is just one component of Lincoln Financial’s ongoing commitment to support local nonprofits that create pathways to high school graduation and post-graduation success. Read by 4th is one of 19 Philadelphia education nonprofits that received a grant from Lincoln Financial Foundation in 2018.
“At the start of the 2016-2017 school year, almost two thirds of children in Philadelphia entered the 4th grade unable to read at grade level,” said Jenny Bogoni, executive director, Read by 4th. “A key strategy to achieve our vision at Read by 4th is transforming neighborhood gathering spots into literacy-rich environments. By creating and placing these new book nooks in communities, Lincoln Financial is ensuring families with young children can integrate reading into their busy lives.”
