Lincoln Financial Group and Teach For America’s Greater Philadelphia chapter announced today that Damien Schuster and Kareem Kalil, sixth-grade science and math teachers, respectively, at Young Scholars Charter School in Philadelphia have been named Lincoln Financial Fellows. As part of the fellowship, Lincoln Financial employees will work with Schuster and Kalil on special activities to support student learning, including a pen pal program and classroom visits, to expose students to career options with a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) focus.
“We’re thrilled to have Damien and Kareem as this year’s Lincoln Financial Fellows, and we look forward to working with them and their students,” said Nancy Rogers, senior vice president of corporate social responsibility at Lincoln Financial Group and president of the Lincoln Financial Foundation. “At Lincoln Financial, we’re committed to supporting programs that equip children to embrace opportunities and get the most out of life. Math and science are important in our industry, and for many other careers, and it’s exciting to see children develop their skills – and confidence – in these areas as they prepare for their futures.”
The Lincoln Financial Fellow program is part of a comprehensive partnership with TFA, through which Lincoln Financial employees enhance the company’s financial commitment by engaging with students and teachers in their classrooms.
"Kareem and Damien are working side by side to teach critical science and math skills to their students in exciting and creative ways,” said Charles Adams, Executive Director of Teach For America—Greater Philadelphia. “Through this fellowship, we know they will expand the educational opportunities for their students and build on the success their students have already achieved."
Born and raised in Piedmont, S.D., the eldest of five siblings, Schuster has always felt a lot like a teacher-mentor. He moved to Minneapolis and attended the University of Minnesota, where he earned a degree in political science. Later, his public policy studies and interests converged, leading him to the education field and to teach through Teach For America. Currently, Schuster is in his second year of teaching science at Young Scholars Charter School.
Kalil, a Boston native with a degree in economics and urban education from Colby College (Waterville, Maine), honed his passion for education in a fourth grade classroom in Boston, where he was placed while working with City Year during a gap year before college. Teach For America, an AmeriCorps service program like City Year, enabled him to continue to work in education after graduation, and he is now in his second year of teaching sixth grade math at Young Scholars Charter School.
